48 Swap the World! — So, You Want to 48RE Swap Your Truck?
Thinking about ditching your 68RFE and swapping to a 48RE? You're in the right place.
With over 30 completed 68RFE-to-48RE swaps, we've learned a thing or two about what works, what doesn't, and what you should consider before making the switch.
Before jumping into a swap, ask yourself a few questions:
-
How much horsepower are you making now, and what are your future goals?
-
Is this your daily commuter, weekend warrior, burnout rig, or mud toy?
-
Are you the only person driving the truck?
-
Would you prefer automatic shifting or a full manual valve body (FMVB)?
-
What's your budget?
These questions play a major role in choosing the right transmission for your truck.
Why We Recommend a 48RE Swap Above 900 HP
Can a properly built 68RFE handle 1,000+ horsepower? Absolutely.
But just because it can doesn't always mean it's the most practical or cost-effective option.
At those power levels, especially when you're abusing the truck every weekend, the 68RFE starts becoming more of a wear item than we'd like to accept.
Even with ideal tuning, proper gearing, and the correct tire setup, keeping a high-horsepower 68RFE alive under constant abuse can mean frequent refreshes, additional downtime, and expensive maintenance.
Eventually, the cost and hassle of repeatedly refreshing a 68RFE can outweigh the investment of swapping to a 48RE.
That's why we generally recommend a 48RE swap for trucks making over 900 HP.
Automatic or Full Manual Valve Body?
One of the biggest advantages of the 48RE platform is its versatility.
Whether you want to retain automatic shifting for a street-driven truck or prefer a full manual valve body (FMVB) for a more hands-on performance setup, we can build either configuration.
The right choice comes down to how you drive your truck and what you expect from it.
Built for Long-Term Abuse
A properly built 48RE can offer excellent durability in high-horsepower applications.
Depending on the combination, maintenance, and how hard the truck is driven, we've found that a well-built 48RE can often go 2–4 years between major refreshes, even in trucks that regularly see hard use.
That's not a guaranteed service interval, but it highlights why we believe the 48RE is often the better long-term investment for serious performance builds.
Our Philosophy
At Thompson Transmission, we're not saying the 68RFE is a bad transmission. We've built plenty of them to handle serious horsepower.
We're saying that once you reach a certain power level, the question isn't just what the transmission can hold — it's how long it can hold it and what it costs to keep it there.
With over 30 swaps completed, we can help you choose the right 48RE build, shifting configuration, and supporting components for your truck.
