68RFE Stage 1 vs Stage 2: Which Transmission Do You Need?

68RFE Stage 1 vs. Stage 1.5 vs. Stage 2 vs. Stage 3: Which One Is Right for You?

At Thompson Transmission, we understand that not every Cummins owner has the same goals. Some just want a dependable daily driver, while others are constantly chasing more horsepower. That's why each of our 68RFE builds was developed with a specific customer in mind.

Stage 1 Stock Plus — The Everyday Driver

Not everyone buys a Cummins to make big horsepower. Some guys simply enjoy owning a diesel, commuting to work, and occasionally pulling the boat to the lake.

Our Stage 1 Stock Plus was designed specifically for stock trucks with no added horsepower. It's a dependable, budget-conscious replacement for owners who have no interest in performance modifications.

Stage 1.5 — The Build Our Customers Asked For

We kept hearing the same question:

"My truck is deleted but otherwise stock. I don't want a second-gen swap or bigger injectors, so why do I need a fully loaded Stage 2?"

They had a point.

That's why we developed the Stage 1.5, a budget-friendly solution for mildly modified trucks that need more durability than a basic replacement without paying for unnecessary performance upgrades.

It's a build we're confident standing behind.

Stage 2 Tow Maxx — For Those Wanting More

Our Stage 2 Tow Maxx bridges the gap between mildly modified daily drivers and serious performance trucks.

Designed for owners adding horsepower, upgrading turbochargers, or putting their trucks through demanding towing applications, the Stage 2 provides increased clutch capacity and upgraded components while maintaining street-friendly drivability.

Stage 3 — Built From Real-World Experience

Our Stage 3 was developed around owner Brendon Thompson's personal truck.

Like most diesel enthusiasts, a little more horsepower was never enough. Starting with an S467, Brendon continued finding weak points in the 68RFE as power increased.

Eventually, the truck received an S472 and 100% over injectors. Keep in mind, this was around 2019, when making 1,000 HP generally required something closer to an S485!

Through repeated testing and improvements, Brendon developed a transmission capable of handling his driving habits, added horsepower, occasional track visits, and those weekend trips to Mexico.

That experience became the foundation of our Stage 3, designed for high-horsepower street trucks that see more than just the daily commute.

Which Build Fits Your Truck?

Build Best Application
Stage 1 Stock trucks and everyday driving
Stage 1.5 Mildly modified trucks with stock turbo and fueling
Stage 2 Increased horsepower, towing, and upgraded turbos
Stage 3 High-horsepower street trucks and occasional racing

Our philosophy is simple: We don't believe every customer needs our most expensive transmission. We believe in building the right transmission for how you actually use your truck.
